Before we begin, let us make it clear that this tutorial is primarily for those people who have more than one version ofPowerPoint installed on their Mac. Additionally, they are not happy about the version that launches when they open a PowerPoint file.Or they may find that PowerPoint files open in anotherprogram even if they have PowerPoint installed. Ifany of these situations sound familiar to you, then this tutorial is for you.

You can choose Metric, US, or UK. On the PowerPoint menu, select Preferences, and then select View. Click the arrow next to Ruler units, and select a unit of measure from the list. Follow these steps to set PowerPoint 2016 for Mac as your defaultversion:

  1. Locate any PowerPoint file in Finder, and select it as can be seen in Figure 2, below.

  3. Now, right-click (or Ctrl+click) the selected file to bring up the contextualmenu. Choose the Get Info option, as shown in Figure 2.
  4. Within the resultant Get Info pane, locate the Open With section, as shown inFigure 3, below.

  6. You will find a drop-down list in this section – click to see the options as shown in Figure 4,below.

  8. You can choose to change the default application to any of the options listed in this drop-down list. If theapplication you want to use as the default is not listed, you can click the Other option that lets you navigate andchoose another application from the Applications folder.

You must be logged in with an account that has administrator rights on your Mac to change these settings. If you are prompted for a username/password, use the ones for your administrator account on your Mac, not your MIT Kerberos Principle.

  1. In a browser, go to the webpage 127.0.0.1:631/printers.
    Note: If you get an error message such as 'cannot connect' or 'web interface is disabled', start the Terminal app (in Applications > Utilities) and enter the command: cupsctl WebInterface=Yes
  2. Select your printer (link is in blue).
  3. Under Administration, select Set default options.
  4. Modify the options that you wish to change. In this generic example I have used the generic driver instead of HP, Dell or other so few options are available.
  5. Click on 'Set Default Options' at the bottom of the list of options.
  6. Enter your administration username and password into the dialog box that appears and then click the blue Okay button in the bottom right corner of the box.
  7. Go back to terminal and run the command: cupsctl WebInterface=No if you wish for that webpage to be disabled, e.g. public machine.
